Brawl Stars is an online multiplayer arena battle game, played by hundreds of millions worldwide. For the little easter egg games that we created together with W+K Portland, we took one of the characters of the game, 8-Bit, and brought him along through alternate universes of the ‘what could have beens’ of the Brawl Stars game.
The games
There were three different levels, each playing with different backstories of how Brawl Stars came to be. To trigger these easter egg games, players had to tap the 8-Bit character eight times on the main menu. From there, they could explore all three levels and their incredible cutscenes. As long as they found the easter eggs connecting them. Each level was inspired by the early game genres that shaped the industry.
To progress from one level to the next, we drew on how glitches and easter eggs have always played a central role in gaming history — where accidents and failure were often the only way forward. The design of the games was also inspired by key moments and iconic genres in gaming history.
Cutscenes
This was where we had the most fun: taking something weird and random and making it even weirder. Everything was inspired by the history of Brawl Stars, its (sometimes fictional) backstory and the deep lore built by its massive, loyal fanbase.

The results were incredible. We were amazed by how quickly the fanbase discovered all three levels, the final boss battle, and by the overwhelming positive sentiment shared online about the mini-games.
